Financial Protection
We offer financial protection benefits such as life insurance, Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) insurance, and whole life with long-term care. In addition, business travel accident insurance is offered at no cost to you.
Life Insurance
Life insurance helps ease the financial burden on your loved ones in the event of your passing.
For Basic Life Insurance, salaried employees are automatically enrolled at 1x their annual salary with ORNL paying 100% of the cost. Bargaining unit employees have the option to enroll in coverage equal to 2x their annual salary, with the cost shared between the employee and ORNL.
In addition to Basic Life Insurance, you also have the option to purchase Supplemental Life Insurance—from 1x to 9x your salary (up to 1.5 million)—along with Spouse and Child Life Insurance coverage. If elected within 30 days of your hire date, you will not need to provide Evidence of Insurability (EOI). Be sure to designate your beneficiaries during enrollment in the ADP portal.
Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance
AD&D Insurance provides extra financial security for you or your family if you're seriously injured or die due to a covered accident—on or off the job. You can elect coverage from $20,000 to $500,000, in $10,000 increments, up to 10x your salary. This benefit pays in addition to any life insurance you may already have.
You can enroll or make changes at any time—no qualifying event or medical questions required. Coverage includes additional benefits such as:
- Day Care Benefit
- Higher Education Benefit
- Home Alteration and Vehicle Modification Benefits
Monthly premiums vary by employee group and coverage level. To enroll, visit ADP.
Whole Life with Long Term Care
Whole Life Insurance from Allstate Benefits provides coverage with guaranteed premiums and the ability to build cash value. You can elect coverage from $25,000 to $175,000, with additional coverage available for your spouse.
Included at no extra cost is a Long-Term Care Accelerated Death Benefit, which pays 6% of your death benefit for up to 34 months if you need qualified long-term care. This benefit helps address the growing cost of care, which affects 70% of people over age 65.
Coverage is portable—you can keep it if you leave ORNL.
To enroll, you must have a Qualifying Life Event. Visit Allstate's enrollment site:
- On the Employee Login screen, enter your Badge Number (EID) and your personal ID number (PIN). Your PIN is a combination of the last four digits of your Badge Number and the full 4-digit year of your birth. Example: If the last four digits of your EID are 3214 and you were born on September 21, 1968, your PIN would be 32141968.
- When the Welcome page appears, you are ready to enroll! Follow the on-screen instructions to enroll in your benefits, answer your questions, download forms and more.

Business Travel Accident Insurance
This company-paid coverage offers financial protection if you experience accidental death, dismemberment, or total and permanent disability while traveling on official business. The benefit pays 4x your annual salary, up to $500,000, and is paid in addition to any other life or accident coverage.
No action is required to enroll—coverage is automatic. For full details, refer to the Summary Plan Description under Business Travel Accident Insurance.
